About Us

All are welcome to join whether boat-owners or not .

While we have members at many different marinas around the bay, our principal base of operations is from Maryland Marina on Frog Mortar Creek, off Middle River, MD. The marina address is: 3501 Red Rose Farm Road, Chase, MD 21220.

Originally, we were a club based on the one-design Catalina 25 sailboat. That is no longer the case. After so many years and changes in Catalina production we find that many of our boats are not Catalina 25, and not even Catalinas. We encourage all people to join us in our love of sailing, of the Chesapeake Bay, and of life.

The only thing that unites us is the thrill of sailing and a desire to share our experiences with others. New owners and sailors draw much security by participating with seasoned salts. There isn't anything you can experience that hasn't been experienced by other members: piloting, anchoring, mooring, weather, breakdowns no matter. Offers of assistance are repaid by your assistance to someone else. Sharing fun, sorrows, joys, discoveries, and learning is what we are about.

Members: We are an eclectic group of people from all ages and walks of life. Our members come mostly from the tri-state area of Maryland, Pennsylvania, and Delaware with perhaps one or two from Virginia. Because of the distribution of our membership, there is a wide range of participation in our activities. Some only find time to join us on weekends, some only on our week-long cruises, and yet, others just for our on-land events. However you may participate, you will find a home among a friendly group that loves to sail.

Service: Members are encouraged to seek and hold positions as officers in the club. None of the positions are difficult or particularly time consuming; but, offer a great opportunity to get to know others and to apply your particular set of skills and attributes for the benefit of the membership.

Newsletter: Our dues are very affordable. The single biggest expense in our budget is publishing our monthly newsletter, the Fleet Log, is distributed only to members. The Fleet Log is member edited and member authored. All members are encouraged to submit articles and photographs for publication. There have been articles published by those over 60 as well as under 15. The different perspectives keep the Fleet Log refreshing. It is these member contributions that make each edition of The Fleet Log most anticipated each month.

Sailing Events: We sponsor 10 to 12 sailing events each season. These are mostly cruises of from one day to one week in length. Our annual Moonlight Cruise across the bay is a wonderful opportunity to experience the pure beauty of sailing at night with the company of others who have done it many times before. Our week-long cruises afford us the opportunity to see new and different ports of call, pristine anchorages surrounded by nature, and an opportunity to challenge our skills and equipment. Here you can see bald eagles, blue herons, and snowy egrets in their natural habitat.

Racing: While interest in racing has declined somewhat in recent years, when there is sufficient interest we will hold races twice a month. Boats other than Catalina 25 will be handicapped by the Fleet Measurer.

Land Events: Several times a year we gather at a member's home or some local bistro for the club's official business or just to meet and have fun. These getogethers include picnics at the marina grove, dinners at fine restaurants, pot-luck affairs, as well as dinners ashore while cruising. At the annual Tech Session, members share their hard-won experience. new devices, techniques, cures, cleaners, and nearly anything under the Sun presented in a "show-and-tell" format. Guest lecturers and video presentations are also used.

BoatUS Affiliation: As a Fleet 8 member, you will be given our BoatUS/West Marine Group Code that entitles you to a reduced price membership at BoatUS and West Marine stores, the nation's premier boater's organization. BoatUS offers boat insurance and towing services, a comprehensive marine chandlery, plus newsletters full of tips and helpful information. All members automatically get $50.00 worth of free towing insurance, which can be upgraded at additional cost.
